Inspired by this philosophy, Dr. Ruedi Lüthy, Swiss Aids pioneer and co-founder of the Zurich Lighthouse hospice foundation, travelled to Zimbabwe in 2003. In this country, more than a quarter of the population is infected with HIV. Working under very difficult conditions, he set up an ambulatory HIV clinic and reference laboratory in Harare. The clinic is mainly funded with donations to the charitable foundation Swiss Aids Care International and by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). More than 94% of the money donated is used directly to fund the project and under 6% is used to cover administrative costs.
The clinic currently cares for 3,800 patients, of whom one third are children. The treatment success rate is greater than 90%.
